What is paralysis?
When you can’t move your muscles voluntarily, you’re paralyzed. Paralysis results from a malfunction in the neural system. Your muscles receive impulses from your nerves. Your muscles move in response to such messages. There are portions of your body that you cannot move while you are paralyzed.
What are the symptoms of paralysis?
Paralysis occurs when you cannot move the affected areas of your body, either partially or completely. Depending on where the injury occurred, paralysis may be accompanied by sensory loss.
Paralysis can occur at birth, such as with cerebral palsy.
Strokes and spinal cord damage result in abrupt paralysis.
Certain medical problems might cause progressive paralysis. You may have the following paralysis symptoms:
- A gradual loss of sensation and muscle control.
- Muscle cramping.
- Tingling or numbness in the limbs.
What causes paralysis?
Paralysis results from a neural system issue. The nervous system is the body’s command and communication system. It distributes information from the brain to the entire body, telling it what to do. If anything destroys the nervous system, messages cannot reach the muscles.
Most commonly, a severe accident or medical condition impairs muscle and nerve function. Strokes and spinal cord injury are the leading causes of paralysis. Other factors are:
- Birth defects like spina bifida.
- Autoimmune diseases, including multiple sclerosis (MS) and Guillain-Barré syndrome.
- Brain injuries, including conditions like traumatic brain injury and cerebral palsy.
- Neurological diseases, like amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS).
